Jade Plants Poisonous to Dogs & Cats
All parts of the Jade plant are considered poisonous to Dogs & Cats. While the substance responsible for the toxicity of the plant remains unknown, it is advised to keep the pets away from the leaves, flowers, stems, and roots of the plant.
If you think your dog or cat has eaten any part of a jade plant and are showing any serious issues, it is important to visit your vet. The veterinarian may decide to keep your dog overnight, but this is rare.
Symptoms of Jade Plant Poisoning in Dogs
The good news is Jade plant poisoning side effects are usually mild but in rare cases, the ingestion of the jade plant has caused more serious effects such as convulsions.The symptoms may be as mild as a slight upset stomach, but may cause other more serious issues.
Onset of Symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Lethargy
- Weakness
- Depression
- Aggression
- Hiding
- Slow heart rate (rare)
- Impaired muscle movement (rare)
- Convulsions (rare)
Signs of Jade Toxicity in Cats
The most common symptoms are vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite, and an uncoordinated gait (stumbling).
Onset of Symptoms
- Vomiting
- Loss of muscle function
- Slow heart rate
Symptoms may also include signs of depression, such as:
- Lack of grooming
- Increased aggression
- Lethargy and weakness
- Excessive sleeping and/or hiding
